Celebrations As Apprentice Wins Award

It is celebration time for Joel Shetliffe, an apprentice with Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber Training, who has won the Summer Apprentice of the Season Award 2021 from his employer Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust (CWPT).

Joel joined CWPT’s Inpatient Unit at Highland House earlier in 2021, studying for a customer service practitioner apprenticeship.  He is already well on course to achieve with a distinction and has further ambitions to develop his career through a business administrator apprenticeship at level 3 once he has achieved his current course.

Commenting on Joel’s success, Paul Bishop, Manager at CWPT said: “In the short time Joel has been with us, he has shown high levels of respect to both staff and patients which has encouraged mutual respect.  Although he has never worked within a mental health setting before, he has demonstrated high levels of understanding and application at Highfield House.  Joel is always willing to help staff and has developed a good knowledge and insight into mental health.

“Joel has made several positive changes to the administration processes on the unit, for example enhancing communication with staff and improving recording documentation.  This has enabled us to work more efficiently as a team.  He always sees a task through to the end and is polite and professional on the unit. Joel has a vision of how he wishes to improve the service within his remit and his enthusiasm to help with the development of the service is very refreshing for the team.”

Natalie Croft, Joel’s Training Advisor at Chamber Training added: “We are delighted to have been able to support Joel in his apprenticeship training.  He is a pleasure to work with and we’re looking forward to supporting him to fulfill his future ambitions and career development.  Joel’s story is just one of many, across a wide range of departments within Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. The Trust has embraced apprenticeships as a structured pathway to develop staff and attract fresh talent into the service.”

Following on from the positive feedback he has received, Joel remarked: “I am honoured to be awarded such a prestigious award.  Working in the mental health environment is extremely rewarding and the training I have gained from my apprenticeship has been invaluable.”

Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber Training is working with many employers across the area to develop and deliver apprenticeships around the needs of the business. It is an exciting time to take on an apprentice, particularly with the financial incentives that the government are currently providing with £3,000 for a new apprentice hire available up to the end of September.  In addition, there is a further £1,000 for recruiting an apprentice aged 16 to 18.
